Safe Deposit Boxes in Dubai: Where to Find the Best in 2026

Where to rent a safety deposit box in Dubai, how bank lockers compare with private vaults, what drives the cost and what to check before you choose.

Yes, Dubai has safety deposit boxes, and you can rent one from two kinds of provider: banks, which usually reserve their lockers for account holders, and independent private vaults such as HBS Privé, which rent boxes as a dedicated service to residents and non-residents. The best option for you depends on four things: whether you are eligible, when you can visit, how the contents are insured, and whether the box size fits what you actually own.

Below, we answer the questions people ask most about safe deposit lockers in Dubai, compare the alternatives and finish with a checklist.

Does Dubai have safety deposit boxes?

Yes. There are two routes to a safe deposit box in Dubai.

  • Bank lockers. Several UAE banks, including Emirates NBD and Mashreq, offer safe deposit lockers to account holders. Sizes, fees, availability and eligibility are set by each bank, and often by each branch.
  • Private vaults. Independent facilities whose only business is secure storage. You rent the box directly, without opening a bank account. HBS Privé operates three vaults in Dubai: Jumeirah Lakes Towers (JLT), Business Bay and Dubai Creek in Deira.

Whatever the name used, a "safe deposit box", "safety deposit box", "safe deposit locker", "bank locker" or simply a "safe box" is the same thing: a lockable metal box kept inside a secured vault room, rented usually by the year, that only you (and anyone you formally authorise) can open.

Are bank lockers available in Dubai?

Bank lockers exist in Dubai, but they are not a product you can simply buy off the shelf. They are normally offered to existing customers, and availability depends on the branch and the size you want. If you would like a bank locker, ask your bank directly whether a box is free at a branch near you, whether there is a waiting list, which account types qualify and what the annual fee is. For a side-by-side view, see our guide to bank lockers versus private vaults in Dubai.

Where can I find a safe deposit box in Dubai?

If you prefer a private vault, HBS Privé has three branches, each open Monday to Saturday, 09:00 to 19:00:

  • JLT: Goldcrest Views 1, Cluster V, close to DMCC Metro. Convenient for Dubai Marina, JLT, JVC and Emirates Hills.
  • Business Bay: Bay Square, Building B08, near Business Bay Metro. Convenient for Downtown, DIFC and Al Quoz.
  • Dubai Creek, Deira: Emaar Towers, Riggat Al Buteen, near Union Metro. Convenient for Deira, Bur Dubai and the airport.

Choose the branch that fits your routine: most people visit a few times a year, often on the way to or from work. Addresses, parking and directions are on our branches page.

Is it worth having a safe deposit box?

A safe deposit box is worth it when you own things that are valuable, hard to replace or needed after an emergency, but that you do not use every week. Typical examples are original documents (title deeds, certificates, contracts, wills), jewellery and watches you wear occasionally, gold bars and coins, hardware wallet backups and external drives holding family archives.

A simple test: list what you would store, estimate what each item would cost to replace (in money and in time), and note how often you need it. If the replacement cost is high and the frequency is low, a box is usually worth it. If you need an item most weeks, keep it at home and protect it there.

What you are paying for is the protection around the box. At HBS Privé that means a SIRA-approved facility, guarding by G4S, alarms connected to Dubai Police, biometric entry, a dual-key lock on every box, private viewing rooms and insurance through Lloyd’s of London with cover up to AED 1,000,000, subject to policy terms. You can read how these layers work together on our security page.

Which bank has the cheapest safe deposit box?

There is no single answer, and the headline fee is rarely the full cost. Banks set locker fees by box size and sometimes by branch, and access is often tied to the type of account you hold. A locker with a low annual fee can still be expensive if it requires you to keep a high balance or to hold a premium account you would not otherwise choose.

To compare fairly, ask each provider for the total annual cost of holding the box:

  • the annual rent for the size you need, plus VAT;
  • any refundable deposit or key deposit;
  • any minimum balance or account fee required to qualify;
  • whether the contents are insured, or whether you must arrange cover yourself;
  • charges for a lost key, a lock change or closing the box.

Private vaults tend to publish their prices by size, which makes the comparison easier. Current HBS Privé prices are listed on the safe deposit boxes page, and our price guide explains what drives the cost.

How much is a bank locker in the UAE?

Banks typically charge an annual fee that rises with the size of the locker, with VAT at 5% on top, and most require you to hold an account with them. Some also ask for a refundable deposit. Because fees and conditions differ by bank, branch and customer segment, the only reliable figure is a written quote from the bank for the exact size you want.

At HBS Privé the price is an annual rent per box size, shown ex-VAT with 5% VAT added at checkout. No bank account is needed and no deposit is required. Insurance through Lloyd’s of London is included, with cover up to AED 1,000,000, subject to policy terms.

Is it okay to put money in a safe deposit box?

Keeping lawfully obtained cash in a safe deposit box is generally permitted, and many people keep an emergency reserve in local and foreign currency. Three practical points:

  • Keep evidence of origin. Hold on to withdrawal slips, sale agreements or exchange receipts, stored outside the box, in case you ever need to show where the money came from.
  • Check the insurance. Many policies treat cash differently from other valuables. Ask your provider whether cash is covered, limited or excluded before relying on it.
  • Know the travel rules. The UAE requires travellers to declare cash above a set threshold (currently AED 60,000) when entering or leaving the country. Check the latest official customs guidance before you travel with cash to or from your box.

What cannot be kept in a safe deposit box?

For legal and safety reasons, HBS Privé does not allow the following in a box:

  • firearms, ammunition or explosives;
  • illegal or restricted substances;
  • perishable goods or liquids;
  • any item prohibited under UAE law.

Beyond the rules, some things are simply better kept elsewhere: the passport you travel with, medication, or any original you might need at short notice outside opening hours. If you are unsure about a particular item, ask the branch before your visit.

What are the disadvantages of a safe deposit box?

A safe deposit box is not the right answer for everything. The honest drawbacks, and how to manage them:

  • Access follows opening hours. HBS Privé branches are open Monday to Saturday, 09:00 to 19:00. Plan visits ahead and keep everyday items at home.
  • You must attend in person. Every visit requires your original Emirates ID or passport. Nobody can collect an item for you unless they have been registered as an authorised person in advance.
  • Insurance has limits. Cover, where included, has a ceiling and exclusions. Keep an inventory and read the policy terms.
  • It is an annual cost. Choose the smallest size that genuinely fits your items rather than paying for empty space.
  • Keys need care. Each box works with two keys. Keep them in separate, secure places and tell the branch immediately if one is lost.

What can I use instead of a safety deposit box?

The main alternatives are a home safe, a bank locker, a dealer’s bullion storage service or digital copies. Each suits a different need:

OptionBest forMain limitation
Home safeItems you use every weekStays with the home: exposed to burglary, fire and coercion, and home insurance limits often apply
Bank lockerExisting customers with a locker available at their branchUsually tied to an account; hours, availability and insurance vary by bank
Dealer bullion storageGold or silver bought from that dealerUsually limited to metals; not for documents, jewellery or watches
Digital copiesBackups of documentsA scan is not an original: title deeds and certificates still need physical safekeeping
Private vaultMixed valuables and originals you need occasionallyVisits during opening hours, in person

Why are banks stopping safety deposit boxes?

In several countries, banks have reduced or closed their safe deposit services. The usual reasons are that lockers earn little compared with the floor space, staff time and security they require; that branch networks are shrinking as banking moves online; and that the liability and compliance work around stored contents has grown. In the UAE, banks still offer lockers, but availability varies, so ask your bank about its current policy. Specialist private vaults have grown in the same period because storage is their core business rather than a side service.

How do I choose the best safe deposit box in Dubai?

Use these eight questions with any provider, bank or private:

  1. Licensing and security: Is the facility approved by SIRA, guarded, and connected to the police?
  2. Eligibility: Do you need an account, a minimum balance or residency?
  3. Location and hours: Can you reach the branch during its opening hours without difficulty?
  4. Access control: How is your identity checked at each visit, and who holds which key?
  5. Privacy: Is there a private room where you can open your box alone?
  6. Insurance: Is cover included, up to what limit, and what does the policy exclude?
  7. Sizes: Is there a size that fits your items, measured in their cases?
  8. Contract terms: How do renewal, authorised persons, key loss and closure work?

Frequently asked questions

Is it a safe deposit box or a safety deposit box?

Both terms are correct and describe the same thing. "Safe deposit box" is the traditional banking term; "safety deposit box" is the common spoken version. In Dubai you will also hear "bank locker", "safe deposit locker" or "safe box". All refer to a rented, lockable box stored inside a secured vault that only the renter and authorised persons can open.

Can non-residents rent a safe deposit box in Dubai?

Yes, at HBS Privé. Non-residents register in person with an original, valid passport, while UAE residents use their original Emirates ID. No UAE bank account is required. Bank lockers are usually linked to holding an account with that bank, which is often harder for non-residents to arrange, so ask the bank directly about its eligibility rules.

What do I need to bring to open a safe deposit box?

Bring your original Emirates ID if you are a UAE resident, or your original valid passport if you are not. Photocopies and expired documents are not accepted. Registration includes an application form and biometric enrolment. Companies need additional documents, so contact the branch before visiting to confirm what applies to your situation.

Can I visit my safe deposit box on a Sunday?

HBS Privé branches are open Monday to Saturday, 09:00 to 19:00, Dubai time, and closed on Sundays. Security monitoring continues around the clock, but client visits take place during opening hours. If you have an unusual timing need, contact your branch in advance to discuss what can be arranged.

Is everything in my box automatically insured?

HBS Privé includes insurance through Lloyd’s of London with cover up to AED 1,000,000, subject to policy terms, limits and exclusions. "Up to" is a ceiling, not an automatic valuation of each item. Keep an inventory with photographs and valuations, and ask the branch how the cover applies to what you plan to store.

Can someone else open my box?

Only you and any authorised person you register in advance can access your box. The authorised person is added through a form at the branch and must attend with their own original ID and complete the same identity checks. Sharing a key or an online login does not by itself give anyone physical access to the vault.
