What Can You Put in a Safe Deposit Box? What to Store, and What to Keep Out

Jewellery, gold, cash, documents and data backups usually belong in a safe deposit box. Here is what cannot go in, what is better kept at hand, and how to prepare it.

You can put almost any lawful, dry, non-perishable valuable in a safe deposit box: jewellery, watches, gold and coins, cash, original documents, data drives, hardware wallets and family heirlooms. What you cannot store is anything illegal, dangerous, liquid or perishable, or anything your rental agreement excludes. The more useful question is what you should store, because a few originals need to be within reach on the day you need them.

What can you put in a safe deposit box?

A safe deposit box is best for things that are valuable, compact, rarely needed and hard to replace. HBS Privé has published a broad list of typical contents: precious metals, jewellery, gemstones, cash and coins, hardware wallets, data storage, deeds, wills, contracts, company documents, artwork and heirlooms. In practice, most clients use their box for a mix of the following.

  • Jewellery and gemstones: pieces worn only a few times a year, inherited sets, loose stones with their certificates.
  • Watches: the part of a collection that is not in rotation, with boxes and papers kept alongside or separately.
  • Gold, silver and coins: bars, sovereigns and collectible coins, ideally in their original sealed packaging.
  • Cash: a reserve in dirhams or another currency, counted and sealed.
  • Original documents: title deeds, wills, powers of attorney, attested certificates, share certificates and company records.
  • Data and digital keys: encrypted hard drives, USB keys, a spare hardware wallet or a metal recovery-phrase backup.
  • Keepsakes: letters, photographs, medals, small artworks and objects whose value is personal rather than financial.

For detailed advice on the most common categories, see our guides to storing gold, jewellery and watches, protecting important documents and storing hardware wallets and seed phrases.

Can you keep cash in a safety deposit box?

Yes. Keeping your own lawfully obtained cash in a safe deposit box is common, and HBS Privé lists cash among the items clients store. Before you do, think through three practical points.

  • Proof of origin. Keep bank withdrawal slips, sale agreements or other records that show where the money came from. Store those records outside the box.
  • Proof of amount. Count the cash, seal it in labelled envelopes and write the total and date in your inventory. Cash is the hardest item to prove after a loss.
  • Insurance terms. Many policies treat cash differently from other valuables, with lower limits or specific conditions. Ask how the cover applies to cash before relying on it; our safe deposit box insurance guide lists the questions to ask.

Cash in a box also earns nothing and loses value to inflation, so most people keep only a reserve there rather than long-term savings.

Is it illegal to keep cash in a safe deposit box?

Not in itself. What matters is that the money was obtained lawfully and that you can show it. The UAE has strict anti-money-laundering rules, and regulated businesses, including vault operators, may ask questions as part of their own compliance checks. If you carry cash into or out of the UAE, check the current declaration requirements published by the UAE customs authorities before you travel. This is general information, not legal advice; if your situation is complex, speak to a UAE-qualified lawyer.

What cannot be kept in a safe deposit box?

For legal and safety reasons, some items are never accepted. HBS Privé’s published guidance excludes:

  • firearms, ammunition and explosives;
  • illegal or restricted substances;
  • perishable goods and liquids;
  • any item prohibited under UAE law.

The same logic applies to anything that could leak, decay, ignite or harm people and property: fuels, solvents, corrosive or radioactive material, pressurised containers, food, plants and perfume. Stolen goods, counterfeit items and anything subject to a legal dispute or seizure order also have no place in a box.

There are practical limits too. HBS Privé’s size pages currently state a maximum weight of 5 kg per box, which matters if you are storing gold bars or coins. The prohibited-items clause in your rental agreement is always the final reference, so read it before your first visit and ask the branch if an item is borderline.

What should you not keep in a safe deposit box?

Some items are allowed but are better kept elsewhere. A vault is open during published hours, Monday to Saturday from 09:00 to 19:00, so anything you might need on a Sunday evening, at an airport or in an emergency should not be locked away alone. The table below shows how to split common items.

How should you prepare items before storing them?

  1. Make an inventory. List each item with a photograph, serial or reference number, value evidence and the date it went into the box. Keep the inventory somewhere other than the box.
  2. Protect against moisture. Use acid-free sleeves for documents, soft pouches for jewellery and sealed bags for electronics. A sachet of silica gel is a sensible addition in Dubai’s humid months.
  3. Separate what scratches. Keep diamonds and hard stones away from softer pieces, and store watches in individual pouches or a roll.
  4. Power down electronics. Drives and hardware wallets should be switched off, disconnected and in protective cases.
  5. Label discreetly. Mark envelopes with a reference code that matches your inventory rather than a description of the contents.
  6. Keep keys and ID apart. Your box keys and your identity document should never travel in the same bag.

Which box size fits what you want to store?

At HBS Privé all five sizes are 30 cm wide and differ mainly in height. Flat document folders fit the slim Classic box (5 cm high); pouches, watch rolls and a small jewellery case suit Premier or Prestige; boxed collections and archive folders need Elite; and bulkier items go in Privé. Compare the dimensions on the safe deposit boxes page, or use Find your safe to match the items you have in mind to a size.

If you are unsure whether something fits or is allowed, bring the question to a branch visit. You can choose a branch and arrange a visit to see the boxes before you decide.

Frequently asked questions

Can I store cash in a safe deposit box in Dubai?

Yes. Lawfully obtained cash is a common use of a safe deposit box, and HBS Privé lists cash among typical contents. Keep records that show where the money came from, count and seal it, and note the amount in an inventory stored elsewhere. Check how the insurance treats cash before relying on it.

Can I store gold bars in a safe deposit box?

Yes, gold bars and coins are among the most common contents. Keep them in their original sealed packaging with certificates, and record weights and serial numbers. HBS Privé’s size pages currently state a maximum of 5 kg per box, so a large holding may need more than one box. Confirm the limit with your branch.

Can I keep liquids, perfume or medicines in a safe deposit box?

No. Liquids and perishable items are excluded because they can leak, evaporate, decay or damage other clients’ property. The same applies to flammable, corrosive or pressurised products. If you need to keep something unusual, describe it to your branch first and follow the prohibited-items clause in your rental agreement.

Does anyone see what I put in my box?

No. At HBS Privé, staff take part in the dual-key opening, then you handle your box alone in a private viewing room. You do not need to show or declare the contents to staff. For insurance purposes, keep your own inventory, photographs and valuations so that you can prove what was stored.

Should I keep my passport in a safe deposit box?

Not your main passport. You need an original Emirates ID or passport to enter the vault, and you need your passport to travel. A second-nationality passport, an expired passport with valid visas or a spare document you rarely use is a good fit, with a copy kept at home.
