Safe Deposit Box Sizes in Dubai: What Fits in Each
The five HBS Privé safe deposit box sizes explained: dimensions, approximate volume, what fits in each and a simple method to choose the right size first time.
HBS Privé offers five safe deposit box sizes. The three smaller boxes share the same 30 × 45 cm footprint and differ only in height: Classic (5 cm), Premier (7.5 cm) and Prestige (15 cm). The two larger boxes are deeper, at 30 × 60 cm, with Elite 30 cm high and Privé 60 cm high. For documents and a few small pieces, Classic or Premier is usually enough; for jewellery cases and watch rolls, Prestige; for collections and bulkier items, Elite or Privé.
What are the five safe deposit box sizes?
Dimensions are height × width × depth. They are the published external dimensions of each box, so the usable interior is slightly smaller.
| Size | Dimensions (H × W × D) | Typical contents |
|---|---|---|
| Classic | 5 × 30 × 45 cm | Documents, passports, envelopes, a portable drive, a few rings |
| Premier | 7.5 × 30 × 45 cm | A4 folders, title deeds and certificates, several passports, a small jewellery pouch |
| Prestige | 15 × 30 × 45 cm | A jewellery case, a watch roll, a document folder, passports and cards |
| Elite | 30 × 30 × 60 cm | Several cases, a camera body, larger keepsakes, a family archive |
| Privé | 60 × 30 × 60 cm | Multiple jewellery and watch cases, bulkier collectibles, several folders |
Whatever the size, the current limit is 5 kg per box. For most documents and jewellery this is never an issue; for gold it often decides the size, as explained below.
What is the size of a small bank locker?
The smallest box at most vaults, bank or private, is a shallow drawer: a few centimetres high and wide enough to hold A4 documents lying flat. At HBS Privé, the smallest size, Classic, is 5 cm high on a 30 × 45 cm footprint. That comfortably takes passports, envelopes, certificates in sleeves and a portable hard drive, but not a watch box or a rigid jewellery case. Bank locker sizes are set by each bank, so ask for the internal dimensions rather than a size name when you compare.
What fits in each size?
These examples use typical item sizes, measured in their protective cases, laid side by side rather than stacked.
Classic: flat documents and small items
A passport is about 1.5 cm thick in a sleeve, and a portable hard drive about 2 cm. Classic suits people whose main concern is original documents: title deeds, birth and marriage certificates, share certificates, a will copy, spare passports and a drive with family photographs. A few rings or a soft pouch fit too.
Premier: document archives and a pouch
The extra 2.5 cm of height matters. An A4 document folder about 3 cm thick fits with room to spare, alongside several passports and a small jewellery pouch. Premier is a good choice for a household’s paperwork plus a handful of pieces. A standard watch roll, at around 8 cm high, needs Prestige.
Prestige: jewellery cases and watches
At 15 cm, Prestige is the first size that takes rigid cases. A jewellery case of about 6 cm and a watch roll of about 8 cm can sit side by side, with a document folder alongside. This is the most versatile size for people storing a mix of jewellery, watches and papers.
Elite: collections and larger objects
Elite doubles the height again and adds depth, to 30 × 30 × 60 cm. It suits several cases stacked, a camera body, a keepsake box, a family archive in multiple folders, or a small collection of coins in tubes and capsules, within the weight limit.
Privé: the largest box
At 60 cm high, Privé is the largest box, designed for bulkier items and larger collections. Like every size it takes up to 5 kg, so it is best for volume rather than weight: several cases, boxed items or archives.
How do I choose the right safe deposit box size?
A two-minute method avoids paying for space you do not need:
- Gather everything you plan to store, in the cases, pouches or sleeves you will actually use.
- Lay the items side by side on a 30 × 45 cm area (roughly a sheet of A3 paper). Stacking wastes access space.
- Measure the tallest item. That height, plus a centimetre or two, is your minimum box height.
- Weigh anything metal. Gold, silver and coin sets add up quickly.
- Allow for growth, but modestly: you can upgrade later.
The size finder does this for you from a list of common items, showing the arranged height and weight against each box.
How much gold fits in a safe deposit box?
Space is rarely the limit for gold; weight is. A 1 kg bar measures roughly 11 × 5 × 2.5 cm, so five bars would fit easily in a Classic box, and five bars also reach the current 5 kg limit. If you store more than that, split it across two boxes rather than choosing a larger size. Coins in tubes or capsules follow the same rule: count the weight, not the volume.
Can I change size later?
Yes. If your collection grows, you can upgrade to a larger size during the rental, subject to availability at your branch. That makes it reasonable to start with the size that fits today rather than paying for a much larger box in advance. Our price guide explains how size affects the annual cost.
Frequently asked questions
Are the published dimensions internal or external?
The dimensions currently published for HBS Privé boxes are external, so the usable interior is slightly smaller in each direction. If your items are close to a limit, bring their measurements to a branch and ask to see the physical format before you reserve. This matters most for rigid cases and watch boxes, where one centimetre can decide the size.
Which safe deposit box size is best for documents?
Classic suits loose documents in sleeves, passports and envelopes, since it is 5 cm high on a 30 × 45 cm footprint. If you keep papers in thick A4 folders or ring binders, Premier, at 7.5 cm high, gives more room. Very large archives of several folders may need Prestige or Elite. Measure your folders before choosing.
Will a watch box fit in a safe deposit box?
A single watch in a soft pouch fits any size. A rigid watch box or a watch roll, typically around 8 cm high, needs at least Prestige, which is 15 cm high. For a collection in a multi-watch case, measure the case height, and consider Elite if you also store jewellery cases and documents alongside it.
Is there a weight limit for a safe deposit box?
Yes. The current limit at HBS Privé is 5 kg per box, whichever size you choose. It rarely matters for documents or jewellery, but it does for gold, silver and coin collections. Five 1 kg gold bars reach the limit, so larger holdings should be split across two boxes. Confirm the limit for your size with the branch.
Can I see the boxes before choosing?
Yes. You can visit any of the three branches, JLT, Business Bay or Dubai Creek in Deira, Monday to Saturday from 09:00 to 19:00, and ask to see the box formats in person. Bring the measurements of your largest items. Availability of each size can vary by branch, so contact the branch before travelling.
