Can Tourists and Non-Residents Rent a Safe Deposit Box in Dubai?

Yes, non-residents can rent a private safe deposit box in Dubai. The documents visitors need, how to plan the visit, managing the box from abroad and travelling with valuables.

Yes. Tourists, international visitors and other non-residents can rent a safe deposit box in Dubai from HBS Privé, which accepts both UAE residents and non-residents. You register in person with your original, valid passport; no UAE residence visa, local address or UAE bank account is needed. Bank lockers are different: they are usually linked to holding an account with that bank, which is often harder to arrange without residency.

Who can rent a safe deposit box in Dubai without residency?

At HBS Privé, anyone who passes the identity and compliance checks at registration can rent a box, whether they live in the UAE or visit a few times a year. That includes:

  • visitors who spend part of the year in Dubai;
  • overseas owners of Dubai property who want their title deeds and keys kept safely in the city;
  • families who keep jewellery or documents in Dubai while living elsewhere;
  • people relocating to or from the UAE who need secure storage during the move.

Final acceptance is always confirmed by the branch after its checks. If you split your life between Dubai and another city, our guide to living between cities offers a wider planning checklist.

What documents do non-residents need?

An original, valid passport. Copies, photographs of the passport and expired documents are not accepted. Use the same passport at every visit, because your identity is checked each time and matched to your registration and biometrics.

If your passport is renewed while you rent the box, tell the branch before your next visit so that your record can be updated. If you hold more than one nationality, register with the passport you normally travel on to Dubai.

How do I plan the visit from abroad?

Before you travel

  1. Choose your size using the safe deposit boxes page. Measure your items in their cases.
  2. Choose your branch: JLT, Business Bay or Dubai Creek (Deira). Pick the one closest to where you stay. Details are on the branches page.
  3. Reserve online and choose a rental term of one to ten years. A longer term suits people who visit rarely.
  4. Contact the branch to confirm availability, the documents needed and a convenient time. Branches are open Monday to Saturday, 09:00 to 19:00, Dubai time.

While you are in Dubai

  1. Visit early in your trip, so that there is time to return if anything is missing.
  2. Complete registration, biometric enrolment and the agreement, and receive your two keys. Our guide on how to rent a safe deposit box in Dubai describes each step.
  3. Store your items in a private viewing room, and keep an inventory with photographs.
  4. If you want someone local to have access while you are away, register them as your authorised person now: they must attend in person with their own original ID.

Before you leave

  • Keep your two keys in separate, secure places. Do not pack both in the same bag.
  • Store the inventory and a copy of the agreement outside the box, for example with your own records at home.
  • Check your client space login works, so that renewals and invoices can be handled remotely.

Can I manage my safe deposit box from abroad?

Most of the administration, yes. Invoices, renewals and service requests can be handled through your online client space or by contacting the branch, wherever you are. What cannot be done remotely is physical access: every visit to the vault requires the renter or the authorised person to attend in person with original ID. If you know you may be unable to return, ask the branch how closing the rental works before you need it.

Can someone access my box while I am abroad?

Only if you have registered them in advance. HBS Privé allows one authorised person per box, added through a form at the branch. That person presents their own original ID at each visit. Sending a key, a letter or a login to someone does not give them access. Choose a person you trust fully, and remember that their access is to the whole box. Our security page explains how access is controlled.

Travelling with valuables to and from Dubai

Many non-residents bring jewellery, gold or cash to Dubai to store, or collect items to take home. This is general information, not legal advice:

  • Declarations. The UAE requires travellers to declare cash, and certain precious metals and stones, above a set value (currently AED 60,000) when entering or leaving the country. Check the latest official UAE customs guidance before each trip, and the rules of the country you are travelling to or from.
  • Proof of ownership. Carry copies of invoices, certificates and valuations for significant items. They help at customs and for insurance.
  • Hand luggage. Keep valuables with you rather than in checked baggage, and check your airline’s rules.
  • Insurance in transit. Vault cover generally applies to items stored in the vault, not to items in your luggage. Ask your own insurer about cover while travelling.
  • Straight to the vault. Plan to go from the airport to the branch, or at least avoid leaving valuables in a hotel room longer than necessary.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a UAE residence visa to rent a safe deposit box?

No. HBS Privé accepts non-residents, including visitors on a tourist visa or visa-free entry. You register in person with your original, valid passport, and the branch completes its identity and compliance checks before activating the box. Bank lockers usually require an account with the bank, which can be harder to open without UAE residency.

Can I reserve a safe deposit box before arriving in Dubai?

Yes. You can reserve online, choosing the size, branch and a rental term of one to ten years. The reservation does not give access by itself: you still visit the branch with your original passport to complete registration, biometric enrolment and activation. Contact the branch beforehand to confirm availability and a convenient time.

What happens if my passport expires during the rental?

Renew your passport as usual and tell the branch before your next visit, so that your record can be updated with the new document. Bring both the new passport and, if you still have it, the old one to that visit. Expired documents are not accepted as identification for vault access on their own.

How do I renew my box if I am not in the UAE?

Renewals and invoices can be handled from your online client space or by contacting the branch, without travelling. Keep your contact details up to date so that you receive reminders before the term ends. Choosing a longer term at the start, of up to ten years, reduces the number of renewals you need to manage from abroad.

Is my box insured if I only visit once a year?

Yes. Insurance through Lloyd’s of London, with cover up to AED 1,000,000, subject to policy terms, applies to the rental regardless of how often you visit. Keep an up-to-date inventory with photographs and valuations outside the box, and ask the branch how the cover applies to the items you plan to store.
